email Etiquette – or lack if it!

I am really getting annoyed by the number of arrogant, disrespectful expats there are in Cyprus who are either too darn lazy or have no understanding of how to write and address their correspondent when using this alleged modern technique of communication known as email.  Like many things in this world, modern techniques have made for laziness and a lackadaisical approach to living and, more importantly, in this instance, a lack of respect for friends and business associates.  Think back on how you used to write your letters.

Having been associated with several charity organisations on the island I have noticed that this is where the habit is particularly prevalent.

For those of you who are not aware there are a number of websites you can visit that will tell you the basic etiquette when composing your messages and, without going into too much detail here, you can just tap “email etiquette” into your browser and the sites will magically appear.

Let’s face it a ‘Dear Marge’ or a ‘Hi Marge’ is far better than either no salutation or just “Marge”; also a closing greeting of “Regards” or even just “Bye” followed by your name shows some regard for the person you are messaging, but seemingly arrogance and ignorance will out and the contemptuous messages fly too and fro.

There are more than enough problems in this fast becoming unhappy planet so don’t you owe it to yourself to try to make life that little more pleasant and courteous where you can, or are you just happy to react like a Rooney when the fact is pointed out to you?

Come on – try that little bit harder – or, if it has not already, the sour tone of your messaging will, start to appear in the sourness of your appearance.  Think about it!

Happy emailing!
